RAF B37 40th anniv of the First operation use of the Mitchell by the RAF 17 May 1983 signed Peter Ayerst DFC and Capt Konrad S Gruca USAF RAF WW2 FDC. Ayerst was commissioned into the Royal Air Force on 14 December 1938 as an acting pilot officer on probation. In August 1939, he was posted to No. 73 Squadron to fly Hurricanes. He was regraded to pilot officer on probation on 3 September 1939 and his commission was confirmed on 6 October 1939. He was sent to France with the squadron and scored his first victory in April 1940. After a spell instructing, when he shared in the destruction of a Heinkel He 111 medium bomber with two other pilots, he had postings with both Nos. 145 and 243 Squadrons. In July 1942 he went to North Africa with No. 33 Squadron, before being promoted to flight commander with No. 238 Squadron, both postings with further combat success. After a period in South Africa, he returned to the UK, joining No. 124 Squadron flying Spitfire Mk VIIs in defence of the invasion ports, where he scored his final victory; then flew Spitfire Mk IXs on bomber escorts to Germany. He later became a Spitfire test pilot at Castle Bromwich with the instruction of Alex Henshaw. In November 1944, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Ayerst's final victory tally stood at five aircraft destroyed, two of which were shared with other pilots, one aircraft probably destroyed, three damaged and two further destroyed on the ground.[8] After the war, Ayerst became one of the most highly regarded wartime instructors in the RAF. . Group Captain Thomas Gilbert "Hamish" Mahaddie, DSO, DFC, AFC & Bar, FRAeS (19 March 1911 - 16 January 1997) was a Scotsman who served in the Royal Air Force (RAF). As a youth he was selected for an apprentice programme and was trained as an RAF ground crew "metal rigger". He had earned his wings and reached the rank of sergeant pilot by the outbreak of the Second World War. In his second tour he was selected to be a member of the newly formed "Pathfinder Force" (No. 8 Group RAF). At the end of his second combat tour he was brought onto Air Vice Marshal Don Bennett's Headquarter Staff in the position of "Group Training Inspector". In this position he selected, recruited and trained aircrews to serve in the Pathfinder Force. Following the war he continued to serve in the RAF until 1958. Out of the service he worked as an electronics consultant for the Armed Services, and as an aircraft consultant for the film industry. His most remarkable accomplishment in the film industry was the procurement of aircraft, crews and service personnel for the film Battle of Britain (1969). . Good condition. RAF B44 Buccaneer - Presentation of the New Standard to 208 sqn RAF 1 Jun 1984 signed Air Marshall Sir Humphrey Edwardes-Jones KCB CBE DFC RAF FDC. Edwards-Jones joined the Royal Air Force in 1925.[2] He was appointed Officer Commanding No. 213 Squadron in 1937 and in that role advised the Air Ministry on the air operability of the Spitfire.[1] He served in the Second World War in that capacity and then as Officer Commanding No. 17 Squadron before leading a series of training units.[2] He continued his war service as Officer Commanding Exeter Sector and then as Commander of No. 323 Wing in Algiers before being made Air Officer Commanding No. 210 Group in Algiers in 1943 and becoming deputy director of operations at Headquarters Mediterranean Allied Air Forces in May 1945. . WW2 Rare Battle of Britain pilot Harry Clarke 610 sqn signed 50th ann RAF cover. Also signed by BOB aces J Booth 600 sqn and John Gibson 501 sqn, plus the RAF pilot who flew the covers. Clarke was among 28 Ulster airmen who flew in the famous aerial dogfight 70 years ago - seven of the pilots died during the Battle of Britain and 11 others never saw the end of the Second World War. 7 OTU Hawarden on 10th August, converted to Spitfires and joined 74 Squadron at Kirton-in-Lindsey on the 26th. He moved on to 66 Squadron at Coltishall on the 28th. It was again a short stay and on 11th September Clarke joined 610 Squadron at Acklington. On 30th September 1940 Clarke had an incredible escape. During a practice dog-fight his Spitfire L1037 collided head-on with another Spitfire. Clarke's propeller probably struck the other aircraft's wing. He throttled back immediately, trimmed the nose down, opened the hood, undid his harness and climbed out. After leaving his cockpit Clarke was probably struck by the tailplane. He passed out and when he came to he was hanging upside down, suspended by one strap which was fastened very insecurely around one leg. Clarke managed to pull himself up and got hold of the rest of the harness but just before reaching the ground he fainted again. His only injury was a deep cut on the chin, caused by his helmet being wrenched off as he left the cockpit, and some bruises. His parachute pack must have caught on some part of the cockpit and been pulled off, breaking the harness straps, one of which pulled itself tight round one of Clarke's legs when the buckle caught in the loop. The parachute must have pulled open when the pack was wrenched off. He did not remember pulling the ripcord. The other Spitfire, K9818, crashed on Alnmouth beach, F/O CH Bacon was killed. Wreckage from Clarke's aircraft was dug up in 1995 for display in Bamburgh Museum. Clarke went to 602 Squadron at Prestwick on 16th December 1940, moved to 266 Squadron at Wittering on the 22nd and finally joined 255 Squadron at Kirton-in-Lindsey on 3rd January 1941, initially flying Defiants and later Beaufighters. Commissioned in August 1941, he stayed with 255 until December 1942, finishing up in North Africa from mid-November. With his tour completed, Clarke returned to the UK. He became a test pilot and was posted to 23 MU Aldergrove on 18th April 1943 where he remained until released from the RAF on 2nd May 1947 as a Flight Lieutenant. Good condition. RAF B6 70th anniv of the Formation of the Royal Flying Corps 12 April 1912 DH4 signed ACM Sir John Gingell KCB CBE RAF FDC. Air Chief Marshal Sir John Gingell, GBE, KCB, KCVO (3 February 1925 - 10 December 2009)[1] was a senior Royal Air Force commander and Gentleman usher of the Black Rod. He was commissioned into the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in April 1945.[2] A few months later he transferred into the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, serving in the Fleet Air Arm. In 1951 he returned to the Royal Air Force was posted to flying duties on No. 58 Squadron. In 1963 he was appointed Officer Commanding No. 27 Squadron flying Vulcan B2s equipped with Blue Steel missiles and in 1966 he became deputy director of the Defence Operations Staff at the Ministry of Defence.[2] He went on to be Military Assistant to Chairman of the Military Committee at NATO Headquarters in 1968, Air Officer Administration at Headquarters RAF Germany in 1970 and Air Officer Commanding No. 23 Group in 1973.[2] After that he became Assistant Chief of the Defence Staff (Policy) in 1975, Air Member for Personnel in 1978 and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief at Support Command in 1980.[2] His last appointment was as Deputy Commander-in-Chief Allied Forces Central Europe in 1981 before he retired in 1984. WW2 Battle of Britain pilot A Leigh multiple signed RAF VTOL 1st Flight cover. other RAFVR pilot, The son of a regular soldier, Arthur Leigh was called up at the outbreak of war. After finishing his flying training he was posted to 7 OTU and then on to convert to Spitfires in August 1940. Arthur Leigh flew with 64 Squadron at Leconfield and 72 Squadron at Biggin Hill during the Battle of Britain before transferring to 611 Squadron. Awarded the DFM in September 1941, Leigh had then completed 50 sweeps, had destroyed two Bf 109s, probably destroyed another four and shared in the destruction of a Do 17. After a spell instructing and ferrying Hurricanes from Gibraltar to Cairo, he returned to operations with 56 Squadron flying Typhoons from Manston. He was shot down on his first sweep by flak, near Calais but was picked up by an ASR launch. In late 1943 Leigh was posted to 129 Squadron at Hornchurch and was awarded the DDC on completing his second tour in December 1944, spending the rest of the war as an instructor. Also signed by Sir Peter Terry joined the Royal Air Force in 1945 and joined the RAF Regiment in 1946. He elected to become a pilot and passed earnt his wings in 1953. He attended the RAF Staff College in 1962 and subsequently was the Commanding Officer of No 51 Squadron from 1966-68. He was then posted as Station Commander, RAF El Adem until he was posted to the Ministry of Defence in 1970 as Director, Air Staff Briefing. He moved to become Director of Forward Policy for the RAF in 1971 followed in 1974 given the job of Assistant Chief of Staff (Policy and Plans). In 1975 he went to SHAPE for a three year tour before returning in the UK in 1977 to become the Vice-Chief of Air Staff. In 1979 he return to Europe as Commander Âin ÂChief (C-in-C) RAF Germany and Commander 2nd Second Allied Tactical Air Force, followed by a posting as Deputy Commander in ÂChief, Allied Forces Central Europe in 1981. Shortly after he was made Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe. In 1985 he was Governor and CÂommander in ÂChief, Gibraltar until 1989. QCVSA ~ 1959 and 1962; AFC ~ 1968; GCB ~ 1983; KStJ ~ 1986. RAF Flown Admiral Sir John Bush CIC NATO 1967-70 signed 50th Ann of NATO 15 Mar 1999 JS(CC)61 WW2 FDC. Admiral Sir John Fitzroy Duyland Bush GCB DSC** (1 November 1914 - 10 May 2013) was a British Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief Western Fleet. Bush was commissioned into the Royal Navy and served in World War II. He became Commanding officer of the destroyer HMS Undine as well as Captain of the 6th Frigate Squadron in 1955, Flag Officer (Flotillas) in the Mediterranean Fleet in 1961and then Commander of the British Naval staff in Washington, D.C. in 1962. In January 1967 he led a British delegation to South Africa to renegotiate the Simonstown Agreement. He was appointed Vice Chief of the Naval Staff in 1965[6] and the first Commander-in-Chief Western Fleet in 1967. He retired in 1970. WW2 Sqn Ldr Noel. R. Stevens MBE Signed FDC. In Memory of Guy Gibson 1918 to 1994. Date stamped 1994, limited 24 of 41. Named in September 1940 in the November call-up for the Empire Air Training Scheme, Stevens returned to Sydney to enlist on 11 November in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). He trained as a pilot in Australia and Britain and in December 1941 was posted to No. 457 Squadron, RAAF, on the Isle of Man. There he crashed in a Spitfire when the starboard tyre blew out while landing, hospitalising him for a week. On 15 February 1942 he was deployed to the Middle East, where he learned to fly Kittyhawks with No. 239 Wing, Royal Air Force. He commenced operational flying on 7 June 1942 when he joined No. 3 Squadron, RAAF, stationed at Gambut, Libya. The following month he flew dozens of short operations, experiencing a forced landing from a mechanical malfunction and being shot down twice. From October to December 1942 he increasingly led strafing and bombing raids on enemy positions; he shot down several enemy fighters: two German and one Italian (with more unconfirmed). In November 1942 he was commissioned. For his conduct and example to others, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in July 1943. In April 1943 the squadron moved to Tunisia. The next month Stevens was promoted to acting flight lieutenant and on 19 June to acting squadron leader, reported to have been the most rapid rise to that rank from sergeant pilot by an Australian airman. Concurrently, he was appointed to command the squadron. His primary focus became training pilots for the Allied invasion of Italy. The squadron was based in Malta from July. On 3 August he was again shot down by enemy ground fire, this time while flying over Sicily, and crashed near Mount Etna. In August he led a formation to the harbour of Milazzo, Sicily. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire, the squadron attacked and destroyed two ships, six barges, and a flying boat. For this operation and for his leadership, he was awarded a Bar to his DFC. Appointed as commanding officer of No. 451 Squadron on 29 August 1943, Stevens joined his new unit in Egypt. He assisted in the squadron's reformation, overseeing the replacement of Hurricanes by Spitfires. After learning that his wife was seriously ill, he applied for compassionate leave and returned to Australia in January 1944. He was posted to No. 2 Operational Training Unit, Mildura, Victoria, where he remained for the rest of the war training fighter pilots. The unit had no position for a squadron leader when he arrived, and he bore good-naturedly the indignity of reversion to his substantive rank of flying officer until a squadron leader's post became available in October 1944. Noted for his zeal and efficiency, he was credited as a good mentor who imparted his knowledge to pilots and those under his command. On 9 May 1944 he experienced another plane crash when the motor of his Spitfire failed, forcing him to land on a road. Good condition. Jan Kowalski (19 November 1916 - 15 May 2000) was an aircraft pilot who served in the Polish Air Force and Royal Air Force with the ranks of captain and flight lieutenant respectively. He had fought in the World War II, including the Battle of Britain. after the Fall of France in 1940, he had escaped to Great Britain, United Kingdom, where he joined the Royal Air Force, and got assigned service number 793450, and later, P-1909.[5] After being trained to pilot British fighter aircraft, on 21 August, he got assigned to the 303 Squadron. As a member of the squadron, he fought in the Battle of Britain. On 26 September 1940, while piloting Hawker Hurricane no. P3089, he had shot down the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter,[6] and on 27 September, he had damaged the Heinkel He 111 bomber. On 22 January 1941, he was assigned to newly formed No. 315 Polish Fighter Squadron. On 5 December 1942, after ending the turn of combat flights, he was assigned to the No. 58 Operational Training Unit, where he was an instructor. On 13 February 1943, he become a member of the Polish Fighting Team, in which, had made 39 combat flights in Africa. Since 21 July 1943, he was a member of No. 316 Polish Fighter Squadron, and later he was assigned to the No. 131 Wing. On 28 April 1944, he was assigned to the No. 317 Polish Fighter Squadron. On 1 May 1945, he returned to the Blackpool airbase, and on 9 November, he was reassigned back to the No. 131 Wing. In July 1946, he had attended the air traffic controller course, and become the controller at the RAF Swinderby airbase. . Good condition. WW2 Rare Battle of Britain pilot Bernard Brown 72sqn signed 50th ann RAF cover. Also signed by A Mckinnon 804 sqn, Richard Jones 64 sqn, Roy McGowan 469 sqn, A Russell, Alan Gear 32 sqn, H Heron 266 sqn, John Keatings. Flight Lieutenant Bernard Walter Brown was accepted for a short service commission in 1938, and after being accepted arrived in England in September, training at 5 E&RFTS, Hanworth and in late January 1939 he was posted to 5FTS, Sealand. He then went to No 1 School of Army Co-Operation at Old Sarum for a course on Lysanders in August 1939, and soon after joined 613 Squadron. Bernard Walker Brown was flying one of six Hectors detailed to dive-bomb gun emplacements near Calais. On the way to the target, he test-fired his forward gun but a fault caused the muzzle attachment to fly off, penetrate the fuselage and hole the main fuel tank. He jettisoned his bombs and turned back and make a forced-landing. In August 1940 he volunteered for Fighter Command, converting to Spitfires. He joined 610 Squadron at Biggin Hill. In late September he went to 72 Squadron, but on the 23rd was shot down by a Bf 109. He bailed out of the aircraft, badly wounded. Returning to active duty in November 1940, he was posted to 8FTS, Montrose for an instructor's course, after which he went to Rhodesia, subsequently instructing at Cumalo. In 1943, he trained with Transport Command, becoming a ferry pilot. He flew between the United Kingdom and the Middle East. He transferred to the RNZAF in January 1944 and by the end of the year was flying Halifaxes. He was released in 1945 to fly Dakotas with BOAC and later joined BEA, flying with the airline until his retirement in 1972. He died on 23rd January 2017. Lt. Commander Adam McLeod MacKinnon (FAA) served with 804 Naval Air Squadron during the Battle of Britain in 1940, flying Sea Gladiators for dockyard Defense. WW2 Rare Battle of Britain pilot R Stretch 235 sqn signed 50th ann RAF cover. Also signed by John Keatings 219 sqn, Ais Hearn MM and the pilot who flew the covers. R Stretch was posted to 235 Squadron, operating Blenheims at Bircham Newton, arriving on 26th August 1940. On 29th October 1940 Stretch was crewed with Sgt. RF Tatnell for a sweep off the Danish coast. They engaged two He115 floatplanes, before the enemy aircraft escaped into cloud Stretch observed his rounds '..richochet off the armour plating..'. On 4th March 1941, crewed with F/O Lewis, they engaged a Ju88. The forward-firing guns jammed soon after opening fire but Stretch was able to make a number of hits on the port engine. The Ju88 was later confirmed as destroyed. When 235 converted to Beaufighters in June 1941 Stretch joined 86 Squadron, operating Beauforts from North Coates on anti-shipping strikes. He arrived on 23rd June and remained with them, flying on detachment to St. Eval and Skitten as well as North Coates, until 2nd July 1942. On 17th May he had taken part in a strike on the German cruiser Prinz Eugen which was limping south along the Norwegian coast after being damaged by a British submarine. There was a furious response by German AA fire and fighters during which Stretch shot down a Me109. The cruiser escaped to Kiel for repair. 86 Squadron lost four Beauforts in this operation. In July 1942 he went to 8 OTU at Fraserburgh as a gunnery instructor. In December he joined 2 Anti-Aircraft Co-Operation Unit at Gosport, target-towing in Defiants and flying in Oxfords on night co-operation with anti-aircraft units and searchlights. He later served with 7 AACU at Ipswich and Montford Bridge before serving with 577 Squadron, also in the AACU role, from 6th December 1943 till 24th April 1944. They operated from Sealand and Wrexham. Stretch remustered as a Wireless Operator Mechanic/Air Gunner in April 1944 and was posted to Cranwell. On completion of the course in December he joined 502 Squadron at Stornoway, operating in Halifaxes on night shipping attacks. He arrived there on 4th January 1945. In June 1945 Stretch was posted to 279 (ASR) Squadron, operating with Sea Otters and Warwicks from Thornaby. He also served on detachment to 280 and 281 Squadrons at Tain and Beccles. Good condition.
