WW2 Rare Battle of Britain pilot Billy Drake signed 50th ann RAF cover. Group Captain Billy Drake, DSO, DFC & Bar (20 December 1917 - 28 August 2011) was a British fighter pilot and air ace. He was credited officially with 18 enemy aircraft destroyed, two shared, two unconfirmed, four probables, two shared probables and five damaged and one shared damaged with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. Further revisions to these statistics increased this total to 20 destroyed and seven damaged with a further 13 destroyed and four damaged on the ground. Drake flew Hawker Hurricanes, Supermarine Spitfires and Curtiss P-40s (Tomahawks/Kittyhawks), with squadrons based in France, England, West Africa, North Africa and Malta. He was the top-scoring RAF P-40 pilot and the second-highest-scoring British Commonwealth P-40 pilot, behind Clive Caldwell. . Good condition. WW2 Liberation of Brussels cover Signed G d'Ouetremont WW2 SOE Comete line D-Day. His Military career began motorised regiment of the Belgian Army. He took part in the Blitzkrieg campaign of the 10th to the 28th May 1940 when his country was forced to surrender to the Germans At the beginning of 1942 he joined the escape line founded by Countess Andre de Jongh ( Dede ) which later become the Comete line. On many occasions he acted as guide to Allied evaders on the escape route section between Brussels and Paris. Unfortunately he became suspected and was forced to join the escape route himself and after travelling its length crossed the Pyrenees in December 1942 into Spain and flown from Gibraltar to England. His first action was to rejoin the Belgian Army where he undertook training for parachuting into France. Then in October 1943 he was flown to France to assist in the return of Allied evaders by Lysander. Once again he was tracked by the Gestapo and in February 1944 had to return to England. He was however able to land at Normandy at D Day June 1944 where he was involved in several not particularly successful operations. Later returned to England trained joined Belgian SAS Regiment. . WW2 Rare Battle of Britain pilot Constable Maxwell signed 50th ann RAF cover. Also signed by L Martel, R Wolton, T Grey, J Keatings and Bomber pilot escaper Bill Randle. Michael Hugh Constable Maxwell Called up at the outbreak of war, he spent a month as an army officer but then resigned his commission and reported to 9 FTS Hullavington on 10th October 1939. Constable Maxwell completed his training and was posted to 7 BGS at Stormy Down in March 1940 for a gunnery course, after which he joined 56 Squadron at North Weald on 20th April. On 27th May 1940, operating from Manston in Hurricane P3478, he shared a He111 but was hit by Belgian flak. He baled out and landed near the flak battery. The CO, Prince Charles of the Belgians, apologised for shooting him down and ordered a staff car to take Constable Maxwell to Ostend where he boarded a trawler for England. The trawler evaded a torpedo attack and landed him at Deal. Back with 56 Squadron, Constable Maxwell was bounced by Me109's over Le Tréport on 8th June and was wounded in the leg and foot by cannon shell splinters. A tyre burst on landing at North Weald and the aircraft slewed round. He was admitted to Epping Hospital. On 28th August 1940 he claimed a probable Me109, on 27th September he shot down a Do17 and shared a Me110 and on the 30th he made a crash-landing on Chesil Bank after being in combat with Do17's and Me110's over Portland. His Hurricane, L1764, was a write-off but Constable Maxwell was unhurt. On 7th October he probably destroyed a Me109 but was fired on by a Spitfire as he returned. He was posted to 52 OTU Debden on 21st February 1941. In late March he went to CFS for an instructor's course and then returned to Debden. At the end of July he moved to 60 OTU East Fortune to do more instructing but on 8th October he was posted to 604 Squadron at Middle Wallop. He was teamed with Sgt. J Quinton. In March 1942 Constable Maxwell was promoted to Squadron Leader and posted to command the AI Flight at 60 OTU, taking Quinton with him. They were to remain together for over four years. At the end of August 1942 they went to 54 OTU Charter Hall, where Constable Maxwell was to command 'B' Squadron. A return to operations came on 12th December 1942 with a posting to 264 Squadron at Colerne as a Flight Commander. During the night of 21st/22nd January 1943 Constable Maxwell, with Sgt. Quinton as his Radar Operator, damaged a Do217 over Deelen airfield and on 30th March a He111 was shot down in daylight. On 23rd April Constable Maxwell was promoted to Acting Wing Commander and given command of 604 Squadron. He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 18th May 1943). During the night of 25th/26th July Constable Maxwell and Quinton damaged a Do217 over Yorkshire and on 23rd August they destroyed a Ju88 in daylight over the North Sea. Their next victory, a Ju188, did not come until 21st March 1944. During the night of 15th/16th May they destroyed another Ju188, on 2nd/3rd July a Ju88 and, finally, during the night of 8th/9th July a Ju88 was shot down and a Do217 probably destroyed. Constable Maxwell went to HQ 85 Group at Uxbridge on 19th July 1944, was awarded the DSO (gazetted 22nd September 1944) and posted back to 54 OTU to command the Training Wing. With the war in Europe over, Constable Maxwell asked to be sent to the Far East. He was given command of 84 Squadron at Charra, Bengal but the Japanese surrendered before he led the squadron on operations. With the disbandment of 84 in December 1946, he took command of 60 Squadron in Singapore. Constable Maxwell was posted to England on 8th December 1947. On arrival he took four months leave and on 27th April 1948 he entered Ampleforth Monastery as a novice, with a leave of absence from the RAF. He stayed at Ampleforth for four years but decided to leave and rejoined the RAF in November 1952. He flew Meteor, Vampire and Venom jets and commanded 23 Venom Night-Fighter Squadron. Walter Jacobi (January 13, 1918 - August 19, 2009) was a rocket scientist and member of the von Braun rocket group, at Peenemünde (1939-1945) working on the V-2 rockets in World War II. He was among the scientists to surrender and travel to the United States to provide rocketry expertise via Operation Paperclip. He came to the United States on the first boat, November 16, 1945 with Operation Paperclip and Fort Bliss, Texas (1945-49). He continued his work with the team when they moved to Redstone Arsenal, and he joined Marshall Space Flight Center to work for NASA. He worked on rocket structure and components. . Good condition. Erich Karl Warsitz (18 October 1906 - 12 July 1983) was a German test pilot of the 1930s. He held the rank of Flight-Captain in the Luftwaffe and was selected by the Reich Air Ministry as chief test pilot at Peenemünde West. He is remembered as the first person to fly an aircraft under liquid-fueled rocket power, the Heinkel He 176, on June 20, 1939 and also the first to fly an aircraft under turbojet power, the Heinkel He 178, on August 27 the same year. Rare Navy cover signed by Admiral Treacher, Flag Officer, Naval Air Command and Cdr. Reynolds. 21 Oct 72 - BFPS 1369 - 10th Anniversary of Interservice Hovercraft Unit with 9d Scott stamp. RNSC5. Admiral Sir John Devereux Treacher, KCB (23 September 1924 - 30 April 2018) was a senior officer in the Royal Navy who served as Commander-in-Chief Fleet from 1975 to 1977. World War II. Treacher was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1942. As a midshipman, he served onboard the battleship HMS Nelson (28) and the Town-class cruiser HMS Glasgow (C21). He served onboard the Glasgow as part of Operation Neptune, (the Normandy landings) where she made up the Gunfire Bombardment Support Force C for Omaha Beach. Glasgow was hit and damaged during the operation. Treacher subsequently served onboard the Thornycroft type destroyer leader HMS Keppel (D84), participating in the Arctic convoys. Promoted to sub-lieutenant, he joined the Black Swan-class sloop HMS Mermaid (U30). Post-war career Treacher volunteered to join the Fleet Air Arm and reported at RAF Booker in April 1947 for basic flying training. After attending advanced flying training at RAF Ouston, he was awarded his wings and reported to RNAS Lossiemouth. He joined the 800 Naval Air Squadron in March 1949. The squadron was part of the 13th Carrier Air Group embarked on HMS Triumph (R16). After the Amethyst incident, Triumph joined the Far East Fleet, headquartered at Singapore. During the Korean War, Treacher flew Supermarine Seafire and served as the Carrier Air Group Administration Officer. After returning from the Far East, Treacher joined the 703 Naval Air Squadron, the Service Trials Unit (STU). After a short stint in 703 Squadron, he was selected to be trained in Airborne Early Warning (AEW) in the USA and on return, command the first AEW squadron of the Royal Navy. He trained at the Naval Air Station, Norfolk and the VAW-12 (then called VC-12) at the NAS Quonset Point. [3] The 778 Naval Air Squadron was commissioned on 5 November 1951 at RNAS Culdrose (HMS Seahawk) with Treacher as the commissioning squadron commander. The squadron transitioned from a training role to an operational role under him in July 1952, and became 849 Naval Air Squadron. He led the squadron during the Coronation review of the fleet in June 1953.[1] After relinquishing command of 849 Squadron in July 1953, Treacher was appointed to the office of the Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel. However, after a short stint, he was appointed flag lieutenant and personal pilot to the Senior Naval Officer, British Joint Staff Mission, Vice Admiral Sir Geoffrey Barnard. Before taking the appointment up, he attended the staff course at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. After a three-year stint at Washington D.C., Treacher was appointed executive officer of the ice patrol ship HMS Protector (A146) in May 1956. During his tenure as XO, Protector rescued the passengers and crew of the icebound MV Theron, including Sir Edmund Hillary and Sir Vivian Fuchs. In 1957, he was appointed to the staff of Flag Officer, Flying Training (FOFT) at RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron). As staff officer, he was responsible for training of all front-line squadrons. After close to two years in the FOFT staff, he was appointed Commander (Air) of the Illustrious-class aircraft carrier HMS Victorious (R38), joining the ship on 21 May 1959. In March 1961, Treacher was appointed Head of the work-up team of the first aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, INS Vikrant. He was charged with the introduction of aircraft carrier operations of the Indian Navy. In September 1962, Treacher was appointed Naval assistant to the Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy, Vice Admiral Sir Michael Le Fanu. He served in this appointment for two years, after which he was appointed commanding officer of the Type-12 anti-submarine frigate HMS Lowestoft (F103). During his tenure as CO, Lowestoft transferred to the Far East fleet. In 1966, he led the ship during the Beira Patrol.[1] He was promoted to captain in 1962 and went on to command HMS Eagle. Flag rank Treacher was promoted to the rank of Rear admiral and appointed Flag Officer, Carriers and Amphibious Ships (FOCAS) in July 1970.[4] He served as FOCAS till June 1972, when he took over as Flag Officer Naval Air Command (FONAC). The appointments of Flag Officer, Flying Training and Flag Officer, Air (Home) were merged to form a single entity - FONAC. He was then appointed Vice Chief of the Naval Staff in 1973 and Commander-in-Chief Fleet in 1975. He was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath in the 1975 Birthday Honours.[5] He was promoted to admiral on 15 December 1975,[6] and retired in March 1977. Good condition.
