RAF Leeming Air Vice Marshal Basil Embry attack on Amiens jail, and Gestapo HQ. 13 Jul 71 BFPS 1168 RAF Leeming 30th Anniversary of the Introduction of the D H Mosquito into RAF Service. Flown to RAF Gatow Berlin in a Basset XS 765 of No 32 Sqn and Flown in Mosquito. Personally Signed by Air Vice Marshal Basil Embry. Embry saw action during WW II in Norway and France. On the 26th May 1940 he was shot down and captured by the Germans however he escaped and was on the run for two months in occupied France but eventually returned to England via Spain and Gibraltar. A By October 1943 Embry's efforts had made 2 Group a highly effective weapon, with bombing accuracy and serviceability among the best in the Allied Air Forces. The group's contribution to the war effort, such as the bombing of V-1 launch sites in France and the anti-transportation offensive prior to D-Day was arguably decisive. Embry's Mosquitoes also undertook specialist precision bombing operations such as the attack on Amiens jail, and on Gestapo headquarters in Aarhus, Copenhagen and Odense. Good condition. Hans - George Hess KC Commander U- 995. Personally Signed by Hans Georg Hess Knight Cross Holder joined the Kriegsmarine at the age of 16 in April 1940 as a volunteer. He spent two years on various minesweepers before transferring to the U-boat force in April 1942. He made five patrols on U - 466, mostly in the North Atlantic. During her fifth patrol the boat managed to break through into the Mediterranean. In September 1944 Hess took over U - 995 and made five patrols in the Arctic Ocean. The boat surrendered on 8 May 1945 in Trondheim. Hans Georg Hess then spent a year in Norwegian captivity. Personally Signed by Harvard Pilots Mr Mark Campbell and Sqn Ldr J R Maitland. Jock Maitland first saw service during the Second World War after he joined the RAF in 1942. He served again in Korea, at the Suez invasion and in Oman. Jock led a distinguished RAF Career before transforming Biggin Hill Airport into a successful civilian airfield and creating perhaps the best civilian airshow in the UK, if not Europe. Also signed by Wg Cdr John Verney, 20th Baron Willoughby de Broke. During WW1 awarded the Military Cross (1918). At the end of hostilities, he became aide - de - camp to the Governor of Bombay, Sir George Lloyd, from 1919 to 1922 and adjutant of the Warwickshire yeomanry from 1925 to 1929. In 1939 he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire, a post he held until 1967. Between the wars both Lord and Lady Willoughby were keen aviators with their own aeroplane and private aerodrome at their home in Kineton, Warwickshire. He was also Commanding Officer from 1936 to 1939 of the 605 County of Warwick squadron. During the WW11, he was a Duty Controller in the No 11 Group Operations Room at RAF Uxbridge 1940 responsible for the fighter protection of the south-east (when he was mentioned in despatches) and then became Deputy Director of Public Relations at the Air Ministry. Operation Struggle the Attack on Japanese shipping at Singapore successfully damaging the Japanese cruiser. Thrasher was subjected to a three hour depth charge attack and aerial bombing Later, after surfacing, two unexploded bombs were discovered in the gun-casing. HASP8d Flown cover C Kingsford-Smith cover signed H. A. Litchfield WW1 Veteran HMAS Melbourne. 9 June 1978 Brisbane Air Commodore Sir Charles Kingsford - Smith. Flown Cachet Flown on the route taken by Sir Charles Kingsford - Smith during his record breaking flight. Personally Signed H. A. Litchfield. In March 1917 became an apprentice with the Australian United Steam Navigation Co. Ltd and joined his first ship the SS Levuka under the command on Captain R S Sharland. A year later he joined the Royal Australian Navy serving on HMAS Melbourne until February 1920. Personally signed by H. A. Litchfield who flew with Kingsford-Smith on long-distance flights in the 1927. Last surviving member of the great flight made by the southern Cross was Sir Charles Kingsford Smith Navigator in Southern Cross for many record flights with original Silver Vignette which shows the 1928 Trans-Pacific Flight and the continuation round the World. Certified Copy no 0095 of 1250. Signed by Gp Capt W S O Randle WW11 Wellington Pilot ( 125 but numbered 01 - 125 of 1250 and certified. These extra original vignettes, which were designed for the last flight of the Southern Cross have only just come to light and have been kindly donated by their designer Mr Ernie Crome. Fredrich Lang KC, OL S (1008 missions) and Rudolf Opitz In 1939, called up for active duty in the Luftwaffe. His first combat mission as an assault glider pilot came on May 10, 1940, helping to take three bridges across the Albert Canal in Belgium on the same day when Fort Eben Emael was captured. In 1941, he was transferred to Germany's rocket research centre in Peenemünde as the test pilot for the delta wing research aircraft Me-163A. Two years later, he was assigned Project Pilot for the next design, the first rocket powered fighter aircraft, the Me-163B. In December 1944, he took command of the II Fighter Squadron/ 400 Rocket Fighter Group. SC26a Signed by Capt Paul Brasack U boat Commander U - 159 U Boat Series. 1 Feb 72 BFPS 1280 RAF Topcliffe. 55th Anniversary of Formation of the First RAF Night Bomber Squadron. signed both Pilots also Signed by Paul Brasack spent the first years of his service career, like Reinhard Hardegen, in the Luftwaffe. In March 1942 he joined the Kriegsmarine, where he completed a six month U-boat officer training course. After one patrol in U - 590 as watch officer, he took over command of U - 737 in February 1943. His eight combat patrols in U - 737 took place in northern waters, where he attacked several northern-route convoys, but without sinking anything. In November 1944 Kptlt. Brasack left active service to become a training officer in the 25th ( Training) Flotilla. After the German surrender in May 1945 he spent over two years in Allied captivity. The first British assembled prototype took the air on 9th April 1969 from Filton landing at Fairford Glos, subsequently its base. Registered out of sequence G - BSST ( Indicating British Supersonic Transport ) it represents an important milestone in Anglo - French collaboration to provide a Mach 2 airliner utilising conventional light alloys in the main, and exploiting the combination of good high speed/low speed qualities of a slender delta wing. After completing its development task of 83518 hours in the air ( 437 flights, 196 of them supersonic ) Mr Brain Trubshaw and his crew from BAC delivered the Aeroplane to RNAS Yeovilton on 4th March 1976, this cover is issued to mark the occasion of Concorde 002 transfer to a permanent berth alongside the FAA Museum, where it is to be on display to the public. 10p stamp and Personally Signed by Captain H J Abraham RN Commanding Officer RNAS Yeovilton. Despite being severely wounded, continued to fly his damaged Lancaster bomber to bomb Dusseldorf. Managed to land his aircraft safely upon return. Detective Sergeant Frederick William Fairfax GC (17 June 1917, Westminster, London-February 1998, Yeovil), won the George Cross for his heroism in chasing the armed robbers Derek Bentley and Christopher Craig, The pair had broken into a warehouse in Croydon and were pursued by Fairfax onto the roof of the building. The police officer grabbed Bentley, when Craig shot him, grazing his shoulder. Despite his injury, the unarmed Fairfax chased Bentley and managed to arrest and subdue him. More officers arrived at the scene and Constable Sidney Miles scaled the roof, only to be shot dead by Craig, who then jumped from the roof after expending his ammunition, injured himself upon landing and was arrested. Henry William Stevens GC. Stevens was awarded the George Cross for the gallantry he showed while serving as a Constable in the Metropolitan Police Force on the 29th of March, 1958. Prior to joining the Metropolitan Police Force, Stevens served 3 years in the Royal Navy. Leon Verdi Goldsworthy GC DSC GM Died 7 August 1994), Distinguished Australian bomb and mine specialist in the WW11, and a recipient of the George Cross, the highest gallantry award for actions. Awarded the GC for defusing four German ground mines, three magnetic mines and one acoustic mine under harrowing circumstances over a period of ten months. Phillip R S May GC Holder was awarded the George Cross for the gallantry 25 Nov 1947. HM Cable Ship St Margarets his Chief Petty Officer overcome by gas, 1st Lieutenant, the Boatswain and four ratings all tried to rescue him and were themselves overcome. Phillip May entered the tank and tried a line round all the men enabling them to be hauled back. R A C Awcock MM Corps of Royal Engineers. Awarded the Military Medal at Anzio. In the Anzio Beach head during the advance to the Campoleone feature, a detachment of No 2 platoon of a field Company, R E was in support of a troop of a Battalion, Royal Tank Regiment. A minefield was reported and the tanks were completely held up. The RE Detachment went forward and commenced to detect and clear the mines under enemy small arms and shell fire, five of the sappers being wounded. In spite of this heavy opposition Sapper Awcock, with complete disregard for his own personal safety while being sniped and shelled assisted in the clearing of a gap in the minefield. During the whole time he was at work he was in full view of the enemy and it was by his devotion to duty courage and cool example that the work was completed and the tanks able to advance. Free Front dated 24 March 1834 Personally Signed by Maurice Frederick Fitzhardinge Berkeley 1788 - 1867 as a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer he commanded gunboats on the Tagus, reinforcing the Lines of Torres Vedras, in Autumn 1810 during the Peninsular War and, as a captain, he served on the coast of Syria taking part in the capture of Acre in November 1840 during the Oriental Crisis. He also served as Whig Member of Parliament for Gloucester and became First Naval Lord in the Aberdeen Ministry in June 1854 and in that role focussed on manning the fleet and in carrying out reforms and improvements in the food, clothing, and pay of seamen. Letter Rear-Admiral Sir Samuel John Brooke Pechell, 3rd Baronet CB, KCH, FRS (1 September 1785 - 3 November 1849) was a prominent British Royal Navy officer of the early nineteenth century. Although he served in several celebrated naval actions of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars his most important achievements were made while serving as a Lord of the Admiralty, pioneering the science and instruction of rapid and accurate gunnery in the Royal Navy through training facilities and manuals. In addition to his work at the Admiralty, Pechell served in the House of Commons for two constituencies and was on good terms with King William IV, who supported his efforts to improve standards of gunnery and returned him to the Admiralty in 1839 after a five-year absence caused by his support for the Whig government. In 1826 he inherited the Pechell Baronetcy from his father, but died childless and the title passed to his brother George. Pechell was born in Ireland in 1785, the son of Sir Thomas Brooke Pechell and his wife Charlotte. Pechell was well connected in military circles: his father was a senior army officer, as were both his grandfathers, Sir Paul Pechell and Sir John Clavering. His uncle was John Borlase Warren, later to become a senior Royal Navy officer. His younger brother, George Pechell would also become a prominent naval officer. Aged 11, Pechell joined the Royal Navy under the guidance of his uncle, joining HMS Pomone in 1796 during the French Revolutionary Wars. The following year he moved to HMS Phoebe, commanded by Captain Robert Barlow and there remained for the next four years. Under Barlow, Pechell was involved in two significant frigate actions, when Phoebe captured the French frigate Néréide at the action of 21 December 1797 and then the Africaine at the action of 19 February 1801. For his actions in these engagements, Pechell was highly praised and promoted, following Barlow into HMS Triumph in the aftermath of the Africaine action and then moving to HMS Active during the Peace of Amiens in 1803 as a lieutenant. In January 1806, Pechell joined his uncle's flagship HMS Foudroyant and was present at the defeat of the French squadron under Admiral Charles Linois at the action of 13 March 1806. In April 1807, Pechell was given his first independent command, in charge of the brig HMS Ferret operating from Jamaica. In June 1808, he was promoted to post captain and took command of the frigate HMS Cleopatra, in which he joined the squadron being assembled at Barbados for operations against the French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. It was while blockading the latter that he served in his most celebrated battle, the action of 22 January 1809. The French frigate Topaze had been forced to take shelter under a gun battery off Pointe-Noire, Guadeloupe, but had been spotted by Pechell's blockade force. Despite fire from the shore, Pechell attacked immediately and brought Cleopatra close inshore to engage Topaze from close range. Pechell's dispositions were so good that Topaze was soon unable to respond, and the arrival of two other Royal Navy ships allowed him to bring his prize out of the bay successfully. The following month, Cleopatra performed a supporting role in the successful invasion of Martinique and later in the year the ship returned to European waters, Pechell briefly moving to HMS Guerriere before returning to Cleopatra in 1811, operating in the North Sea and off Gibraltar. In 1812, Pechell became captain of Warren's flagship HMS San Domingo, the flagship of the North America Station during the War of 1812. Pechell did not see any action and returned to Britain in 1814. The following year the war ended and Pechell entered semi-retirement, being made a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1815 for his services during the Napoleonic Wars. Good condition. Free Front Signed by M F Berkeley 1788-1867 and Dundas Lord of the Admiralty. Free Front dated 23 April 1834 Personally Signed by Maurice Frederick Fitzhardinge Berkeley 1788 - 1867 as a Royal Navy officer. As a junior officer he commanded gunboats on the Tagus, reinforcing the Lines of Torres Vedras, in Autumn 1810 during the Peninsular War and, as a captain, he served on the coast of Syria taking part in the capture of Acre in November 1840 during the Oriental Crisis. He also served as Whig Member of Parliament for Gloucester and became First Naval Lord in the Aberdeen Ministry in June 1854 and in that role focussed on manning the fleet and in carrying out reforms and improvements in the food, clothing, and pay of seamen. Victor K2 XL189 - call sign "White Two" - lands at Wideawake Auxiliary Airfield, Ascension Island on the 1st May 1982. Captain Sqn Ldr Bob Tuxford and his crew, Flt Lt Glyn Rees (Copilot), Flt Lt John Keable (Nav Radar), Sqn Ldr Ernie Wallis (Nav Radar) and Flt Lt Mike Beer AEO were airborne for 14 Hours and 5 Minutes during Operation.
