On a cold December morning in 1986, the fuel laden Voyager struggled to become airborne to begin her journey around the world. On one tank of gas and without refuelling, the carbon composite honeycomb sandwich airplane, designed by Burt Rutan, would fly around the globe. Taking off from Edwards Air Force Base in California on December 14, 1986 and landing 9 days, 3 minutes and 44 seconds later on December 23, 1986, the Voyager set absolute distance records and many other world records that remain unchallenged today. M. 75th Anniversary of the Royal British Legion black Flown cachet Flown in Lancaster from RAF Coningsby. (27 March 1912 - 26 March 2005), was a British Labour politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1976 to 1979 and Leader of the Labour Party from 1976 to 1980. Callaghan is to date the only politician in history to have served in all four of the "Great Offices of State", having been Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1964 to 1967, Home Secretary from 1967 to 1970, and Foreign Secretary from 1974 until his appointment as Prime Minister in 1976. Callaghan joined the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve as an Ordinary Seaman in World War II from 1942 where he served in the East Indies Fleet and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in April 1944. [3] While training for his promotion, his medical examination revealed that he was suffering from tuberculosis and was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar in Gosport near Portsmouth. After he recovered, he was discharged and assigned to duties with the Admiralty in Whitehall. He was assigned to the Japanese section and wrote a service manual for the Royal Navy The Enemy Japan. During 1945 he was assigned to the Indian Fleet and served on HMS Queen Elizabeth in the Indian Ocean. After VE Day, along with other. Shooting Down Enemy Aircraft Catapult Ship cover signed M A Birrell rare Battle of Britain and ace Capt G C Baldwin, WW11 Pilots. 3 Aug 81 BFPS 1751 40th Anniv. of the 1st Shooting Down of an Enemy Aircraft from Catapult Ship Maplin by Hurricane Fighter Cdr M A. Birrell. Personally signed by Cdr M A. Birrell 79 Sqn, Battle of Britain Pilot, Later 1st pilot shot from Catapult Ship 1941 shooting down Enemy Aircraft. In response to Churchill's request to the Admiralty for pilots Birrell was one of those loaned to the RAF in Mid - June 1940. After conversion to Hurricanes he joined 79 Sqn at Biggin Hill. When the Squadron was rested he was posted to 804 ( FAA ) Squadron at Hatston. After a short spell with 802 Squadron he returned to 804 Sqn when it became a Catapult Fighter unit. Birrell was the first pilot to be catapulted from a CAM ship. He sailed in the Michael E on 28th 1941 bound for New York. Five days out from Belfast they were torpedoed by a U Boat and Birrell was among the survivors picked up after 20 hours in the boats. His next ship was the Ariganuam. On 26th August he was shot off in a Fulmar to deal with a FW Condor. He fired one burst before it vanished into cloud. WW2 fighter ace Capt G Baldwin DSC signed Operation Dragoon Navy cover. HMS Hunter Operation Dragoon Invasion of Southern France Double Signed. 15Aug 90 Portsmouth. Operation Dragoon Invasion of Southern France 15th August 1944. An escort force of carries under the command of Rear Admiral T H Troubridge in HMS Royalist was provided for the invasion and it operated in two groups. HMS Hunter with its 807, 809, 879 and 899 Squadrons was part of the group under Rear Admiral C T Durgin USN. From dawn on the 15th until dark on the 26th they provided continuous air support during the daylight hours of the operation to secure the capture of St Raphael, St Tropez, Toulon and Marseilles. Personally Signed by Captain G. C. Baldwin CBE DSC RN Wing Leader, fourth Naval Air Wing at the time of the action, and Rear Admiral A D Torlesse CB DSO RN took Command of HMS Hunter after Operation Dragoon. WW2 BOB pilot Sqn Ldr Benjamin Bowring 600, 111 sqn signed Joint Service fighter cover, 70th ann Battle of Arras WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot. On 30th August he damaged a Me110, on the 31st probably destroyed a Me110 and damaged another, on 2nd September he probably destroyed a He111 and damaged a Me110, on the 4th destroyed a Me109, on the 5th destroyed a Me109, probably destroyed another and damaged a third and on the 6th destroyed a Ju88. Bowring was wounded in the arm on the 6th and did not return to the squadron until 24th October. He was shot down in early November and admitted to hospital, wounded. After recovery, he joined 260 Squadron at Skitten on 7th December 1940, recently-reformed at Castletown, as 'B' Flight Commander. In May 1941 the squadron embarked on the carrier HMS Victorious. At Gibraltar it transferred on to HMS Ark Royal and on 14th June flew off to Malta. After refuelling, it went on to Egypt and eventually arrived in Haifa to take part in the Syrian campaign. Bowring served with the squadron detachment at Beirut. He returned to the UK in October 1941 and was posted to an Armament Officer's course. He later took command of 278 (ASR) Squadron at Coltishall. Bowring led the squadron until its disbandment in September 1945. By that time it had rescued 998 men from the sea. Bowring was released in 1945 as a Squadron Leader and joined Lloyds as an aviation insurance underwriter. He was a member of the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club, founders of the Cresta Run, and also raced at Brooklands in a Jaguar. Bowring died on 14th August 1994. Good condition. Battle of Britain pilot Wg Cdr David Cox 19 sqn signed 7 x 5 b/w photo in Uniform WW2 RAF. Cox joined 19 Squadron at Duxford in May 1940 and during the Battle of Britain he scored 3 destroyed and 2 probables. In July 1941 he was posted away to train as an instructor and then went to 57 OTU, Hawarden. In May 1942 he joined 72 Squadron at Biggin Hill and went to North Africa with the squadron in November 1942. In Africa he scored 4 destroyed, 3 probables, 4 damaged and 1 destroyed on the ground. He was made a Flight Commander and awarded the DFC (16. 2. 43). Tour expired he was posted back to the UK in May 1943, and then became a Tactics Liaison Officer instructing American pilots and awarded a Bar to the DFC (9. 7. 43). In early January 1944 he was briefly with 130 Squadron before moving to 504 Squadron as a Flight Commander. In March 1944 he went to 84 Group Support Unit remaining there until June when he was posted to command 222 Squadron. He rejoined 84 GSU on July 17 and stayed until October 2 1944, when he was posted to 1 Squadron, later become the commanding officer. He received the C de G (Fr) in September. He was posted away in April 1945 to HQ 221 Group, Burma and led 909 (Spitfire) Wing from May to September 1945. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Lieut General Sir Philip Neame VC signed RE28c 150 Anniv 15 HQ Sqn RE. 26 Sep 75 BFPS 1398 150 Anniversary 15 HQ Squadron RE, Personally Signed by Lieut General Sir Philip Neame VC KBE CB DSO DL who won his VC ( Victoria Cross) on December 15. When serving with 15 Field Coy RE. Neame was 26 years old when the following deed took place, for which he received the Victoria Cross: On 19 December 1914 at Neuve Chapelle, France, Lieutenant Neame, in the face of very heavy fire, engaged the Germans in a single-handed bombing attack, killing and wounding a number of them. He was able to check the enemy advance for threequarters of an hour and to rescue all the wounded whom it was possible to move. During a minor night trench action on the Western Front in the Neuve Chapelle district five days before Christmas 1914, Neame was leading a party of sappers in action when he was requested by the commanding officer of a battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment to go forward and to strengthen the defences in a recently captured German trench. When he got there he met another commissioned officer who informed him that the Germans were counter-attacking with bombs, that his own bombers had all been wounded and that the bombs that were left would not go off. At this Neame went further up the trench to the contact point to talk to one of the surviving bombers there, and discovered that the problem was that he wasn't able use the bombs because there were no fuzee matches left. Neame, knowing how to technically ignite the grenades without a fuzee match by holding a regular match-head on the grenade's fuse and striking a match box across it, commenced lighting and throwing grenades in this fashion into the German trenches at the two different directions where a German dawn counter-attack was materializing, holding it back whilst under continual return fire for forty-five minutes whilst the West Yorks Regiment evacuated its wounded behind him back towards the original British frontline trench. Neame was promoted to the rank of captain in 1915, and was mentioned in despatches in February 1915, and again in January 1916. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in January 1916. Codenamed Operation Black Buck. Detailed insert card and photograph of holders. Signed By John Glenn circled Earth on the Mercury 6 space mission in 1962, becoming the first American to make a complete orbit of the planet. John Glenn grew up in the small town of New Concord in southeastern Ohio. He joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor, flying 59 combat missions in World War II and another 90 combat missions during the Korean War. He shot down three MiG-15s, and was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States. His on-board camera took the first continuous, panoramic photograph of the United States. In 1959 he became one of America's original seven Mercury astronauts, and was chosen as the pilot for a landmark mission: he orbited Earth three times on February 20, 1962 in the capsule Friendship 7. Alan Shepard had been the first American astronaut in space in 1961, but Glenn was the first American to actually circle the globe. (The first man into space overall was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. ) After leaving NASA, John Glenn was elected senator from Ohio in 1974, serving four full terms through 1999. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. Glenn returned to orbit in late 1998, joining the crew of the space shuttle Discovery in a mission that was supposed to be a study of aging in space but became more of a nostalgic salute to a space pioneer. WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilots James Sanders DFC 615 sqn and Air Cdr Ronald Berry DSO DFC signed 1992 Classic Aircraft cover, numbered 1 of 15 issued Rare. James Sanders, DFC (19 June 1914 - 12 August 2002) was a British flying ace who served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. Poor record keeping means there is some uncertainty regarding his tally of aerial victories but he is believed to have destroyed around sixteen aircraft. Born in Richmond, London, Sanders joined the RAF in 1935 and following completion of his flying training, was posted to No. 111 Squadron where he was involved in the introduction into service of the Hawker Hurricane fighter. Soon after the outbreak of the Second World War he was transferred to No. 615 Squadron after performing unauthorised aerial acrobatics. The squadron was sent to France during the Phoney War and during this time he claimed his first aerial victory with further claims made during the Battle of France. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, he also flew in the subsequent aerial campaigns over the southeast of England from August 1940 to May 1941, and among his claims for aircraft shot down were some made as a night fighter pilot with No. 255 Squadron. For much of the remainder of the war, he performed instructing duties and commanded RAF stations. He ended his military service in 1947, and then worked for an insurance company in London. Air Commodore Ronald Berry, CBE, DSO, DFC and Bar (3 May 1917 - September 2000) was a British flying ace and senior officer of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War and the postwar period. During his service with the RAF, he was credited with shooting down at least fourteen aircraft with several more shared with other pilots. Born in Kingston upon Hull, Berry joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1937 and was called up for service in the RAF upon the outbreak of the Second World War. Posted to No. 603 Squadron, he flew extensively in the Battle of Britain during which he achieved a number of his aerial victories. For much of 1941 he served as a fighter controller at Turnhouse. Given command of No. 81 Squadron early the following year, he led it through the campaign in North Africa through late 1942 to early 1943, switching to leading No. 322 Wing in March. He returned to the United Kingdom and spent the remainder of the war in training and staff posts. Remaining in the RAF in the postwar period, he served in a variety of roles with Fighter Command, Bomber Command and the Air Ministry. He ended his military career in early 1969, having reached the rank of air commodore. He retired to Hornsea and died in September 2000, aged 83. Good condition. WW2 BOB pilot ACM Harry Broadhurst signed Avro Lincoln bomber cover WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot, BOB Officer Commanding RAF Wittering, often flew with the squadrons under his command, both day and night fighter units. Air Chief Marshal Sir Harry Broadhurst, GCB, KBE, DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar, AFC (28 October 1905 - 29 August 1995), commonly known as Broady, was a senior Royal Air Force commander and flying ace of the Second World War. In May 1940, Broadhurst was appointed Station Commander at RAF Coltishall, before joining No. 60 Wing in France as wing commander. [2] He participated in ground support during the Battle of France, an experience that taught him the importance of close air support for later operations in the war. He was heavily involved in the Battle of Britain and as Officer Commanding RAF Wittering, [2] often flew with the squadrons under his command, both day and night fighter units. Harry Broadhurst by Cuthbert Orde, 1941. In December 1940, he was posted to command the Hornchurch Sector of No. 11 Group Fighter Command, and continued to fly on operations, even as a group captain. On 4 July 1941, leading No. 54 Squadron as Red 1, he was involved in a dogfight with Bf 109s, claiming two Bf 109Es destroyed at 15. 30 over Béthune before he was hit and his aircraft badly damaged by a Bf 109. He managed to return to base, belly landing his crippled Spitfire, with slight splinters in left arm and left thigh. On 7 July 1941 his Spitfire Mk. Vb was severely damaged by a JG 26 pilot. In the combat he was Red 1 and claimed 1-1-0 Bf 109F at 09. 50 over Gravelines area. In May 1942 he became Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO), No. 11 Group, although he continued to fly operationally where possible. His final kill claims were made on 19 August 1942, bringing his total to 13 destroyed, seven probables and 10 damaged. In late 1942, he was posted to the Middle East and became Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) to Air Vice Marshal Arthur Coningham, commander of the Desert Air Force (DAF). [2] Broadhurst came into conflict with Coningham over the use and objectives of the Desert Air Force. Broadhurst took command of the DAF in January 1943, [2] becoming (at the age of 38) the youngest (until Air Commodore Don Bennett was so promoted on 6 December 1943 at the age of 33) air vice marshal in the Royal Air Force. He quickly perfected the way he perceived fighter aircraft ought to be employed as ground support fighter-bombers. His fighter squadrons were trained intensively to strafe and bomb German and Italian vehicles, tanks, transport and communication lines. This aerial cover of the 8th Army won the approval and appreciation of General Bernard Montgomery and would form the basis of the ground attack principles used during the D-Day landings and beyond. Broadhurst's enthusiastic backing of the Army and his frank opinions did not always go down well with his superiors in the RAF. He returned to the UK in 1944 to command No. 83 Group, [2] part of 2nd Tactical Air Force. In September 1945, he became Air Officer Administration at RAF Fighter Command. Good condition. Mark Wayne Clark (May 1, 1896 - April 17, 1984) was an American general during World War II and the Korean War and was the youngest lieutenant general (three-star general) in the U. S. Army. During World War I, he commanded a company of soldiers in 1917 and was seriously wounded by shrapnel. After the war, Clark's abilities were noticed by future U. S. Army Chief of Staff George Marshall. During World War II, he commanded the Allied Fifth Army, and later the Fifteen Army Group, in the Italian campaign. He is known for leading the Fifth Army in its capture of Rome in June 1944. Clark has been heavily criticised for ignoring the orders of his superior officer, General Alexander, and is to blame for the escape of the German 10th Army which he let slip away in his pursuit of being the first to enter Rome - a strategically unimportant city. The German 10th Army joined with their countrymen at the Trasimene Line. In 1945 Clark became the youngest American to be promoted to general. General Dwight D. Eisenhower considered him a brilliant staff officer and trainer. Clark was awarded many medals, including the Distinguished Service Cross, the U. S. Army's second highest award. Battle of Britain Grp Capt Frank Carey DFC AFC DFM 43 Sqn signed 50th ann BOB cover WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot RAFA4, The Major assault, Scarce cover many were damaged so few around now. Frank Reginald Chota Carey, CBE, DFC and Two Bars, AFC, DFM (7 May 1912 - 6 December 2004) was a Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter pilot and flying ace who served during World War II. Born in Brixton, London, Carey was educated at Belvedere School before he joined the RAF in September 1927 at the age of 15 as an apprentice metal rigger. After completing the apprenticeship Carey was assigned to No. 43 Squadron RAF based at RAF Tangmere. In 1933 he converted to the role of fitter at RAF Worthy Down. In 1935 he applied to become a fighter pilot and completed the training in 1936. Carey was posted back to 43 Squadron and by 1939 was an established pilot. At the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 Carey flew defensive patrols over eastern Scotland, where he gained his first successes. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) in February 1940 for several shared air victories. Commissioned as pilot officer in April 1940, he transferred to No. 3 Squadron RAF and participated in the Battle of France. In May he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for seven enemy aircraft shot down and two probably shot down. On 14 June he received a Bar to the DFC and a promotion to flying officer. From 9 July to 18 August 1940 Carey flew in the Battle of Britain. He accounted for a further nine enemy aircraft destroyed, three probably destroyed, and one damaged but was wounded in July and again in August. His wounds were severe and he took no further part in the battle. In November 1940 he was posted to Operational Training Unit (OTU) 52 as an instructor. Carey was given command of No. 135 Squadron RAF, as acting squadron leader, in August 1941. In December the squadron began moving to India, with Carey leading the formation against the Japanese invasion of Burma. In February 1942 he was promoted to wing commander and by the end of the year had shot down nine Japanese aircraft. Carey was taken off operations and sent to RAF Amarda Road in India as Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Air Fighting Training Unit 1 in 1943. In November 1944 he was promoted to group captain and left Burma for Egypt as AOC at OTU 73. Carey was mentioned in the 1945 New Year Honours list. In July 1945 he moved to England as Group Captain Tactics at the Central Flying Establishment until the Japanese surrender on 2 September 1945. Carey was credited with 23 enemy aircraft shot down, six shared destroyed, four unconfirmed destroyed, seven probable, two destroyed on the ground and ten damaged. Of the 23 credited destroyed in air combat, 15 were German and 8 Japanese. Following World War II he spent two years at Staff College, Camberley and continued his career in the RAF until 1958, when he moved to Australia as Air Adviser to the United Kingdom High Commissioner. Carey retired from the RAF in June 1960 and went to work for the Rolls-Royce Aero Engine Division in Australia. On 3 June 1960 he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire. After his retirement Carey returned to England and died in Chichester, aged 92. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
