Rare Victoria Cross winner Piece Size 5 by 3½ inches Personally Signed by D M Probyn VC Won Victoria Cross in 1858 Indian Mutiny. Probyn was 24 years old, and a Captain in the 2nd Punjab Cavalry Bengal Army, during the Indian Mutiny when the following deeds took place for which he was awarded the VC: Has been distinguished for gallantry and daring throughout this campaign. At the battle of Agra, when his squadron charged the rebel infantry, he was some time separated from his men, and surrounded by five or six sepoys. He defended himself from the various cuts made at him, and before his own men had joined him had cut down two of his assailants. At another time, in single combat with a sepoy, he was wounded in the wrist, by the bayonet, and his horse also was slightly wounded; but, though the sepoy fought desperately, he cut him down. The same day he singled out a standard bearer, and, in the presence of a number of the enemy, killed him and captured the standard. Concorde Snoop nose designer Norman Harry OBE signed stunning 10 x 8 inch photo of a Flying Boat. The Norman Thompson company built mainly flying boats before and during World War One and this is a history of the company and its products. Based at Bognor Regis in Sussex, it used the beach as its airfield for landplanes and a slipway to the sea for its flying boats. Flt Lt M Withers DFC Black Buck Vulcan Pilot flew during the 1982 South Atlantic conflict in Vulcan Bomber in a series of long range bombing mission against the Argentinean occupied Falkland Islands. Codenamed Operation Black Buck. Detailed insert card and photograph of holders. Signed By John Glenn circled Earth on the Mercury 6 space mission in 1962, becoming the first American to make a complete orbit of the planet. John Glenn grew up in the small town of New Concord in southeastern Ohio. He joined the Navy after Pearl Harbor, flying 59 combat missions in World War II and another 90 combat missions during the Korean War. He shot down three MiG-15s, and was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals. In 1957, he made the first supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States. His on-board camera took the first continuous, panoramic photograph of the United States. In 1959 he became one of America's original seven Mercury astronauts, and was chosen as the pilot for a landmark mission: he orbited Earth three times on February 20, 1962 in the capsule Friendship 7. Alan Shepard had been the first American astronaut in space in 1961, but Glenn was the first American to actually circle the globe. (The first man into space overall was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. ) After leaving NASA, John Glenn was elected senator from Ohio in 1974, serving four full terms through 1999. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1984 and 1988. Glenn returned to orbit in late 1998, joining the crew of the space shuttle Discovery in a mission that was supposed to be a study of aging in space but became more of a nostalgic salute to a space pioneer. James J Magennis VC. Victoria Cross Signed rare 130th ann VC Official Navy cover RNSC(4)18. Trained diver James Magennis made two exhausting dives to attach magnetic mines to a Japanese cruiser during the Second World War. He received the Victoria Cross (VC) for his bravery. Magennis joined the Royal Navy when he was 15 years old. During the Second World War he moved from serving in destroyers to submarines. He then volunteered to serve in midget submarines (any submarine under 150 tons, used to enter harbours where full size submarines couldn't go). WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilots James Sanders DFC 615 sqn and Air Cdr Ronald Berry DSO DFC signed 1992 Classic Aircraft cover, numbered 1 of 15 issued Rare. James Sanders, DFC (19 June 1914 - 12 August 2002) was a British flying ace who served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War. Poor record keeping means there is some uncertainty regarding his tally of aerial victories but he is believed to have destroyed around sixteen aircraft. Born in Richmond, London, Sanders joined the RAF in 1935 and following completion of his flying training, was posted to No. 111 Squadron where he was involved in the introduction into service of the Hawker Hurricane fighter. Soon after the outbreak of the Second World War he was transferred to No. 615 Squadron after performing unauthorised aerial acrobatics. The squadron was sent to France during the Phoney War and during this time he claimed his first aerial victory with further claims made during the Battle of France. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, he also flew in the subsequent aerial campaigns over the southeast of England from August 1940 to May 1941, and among his claims for aircraft shot down were some made as a night fighter pilot with No. 255 Squadron. For much of the remainder of the war, he performed instructing duties and commanded RAF stations. He ended his military service in 1947, and then worked for an insurance company in London. Air Commodore Ronald Berry, CBE, DSO, DFC and Bar (3 May 1917 - September 2000) was a British flying ace and senior officer of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War and the postwar period. During his service with the RAF, he was credited with shooting down at least fourteen aircraft with several more shared with other pilots. Born in Kingston upon Hull, Berry joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1937 and was called up for service in the RAF upon the outbreak of the Second World War. Posted to No. 603 Squadron, he flew extensively in the Battle of Britain during which he achieved a number of his aerial victories. For much of 1941 he served as a fighter controller at Turnhouse. Given command of No. 81 Squadron early the following year, he led it through the campaign in North Africa through late 1942 to early 1943, switching to leading No. 322 Wing in March. He returned to the United Kingdom and spent the remainder of the war in training and staff posts. Remaining in the RAF in the postwar period, he served in a variety of roles with Fighter Command, Bomber Command and the Air Ministry. He ended his military career in early 1969, having reached the rank of air commodore. He retired to Hornsea and died in September 2000, aged 83. Good condition. WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot Cyril Bamberger signed piece with b/w 8 x 6 photo. Cyril Stanley Bam Bamberger, DFC and Bar, AE (4 May 1919 - 3 February 2008) was a Royal Air Force pilot who fought in the Battle of Britain, the defence of Malta and the Korean War. Bamberger flew with No. 610 Squadron during the early air fighting over the Channel that followed the Dunkirk evacuation. The squadron suffered heavy casualties but Bamberger was credited with a probable Messerschmitt Bf 109 on 28 August in combat off the Kent coast. When No. 610 Squadron was withdrawn to rest in mid-September 1940, Bamberger was posted to No. 41 Squadron RAF at Hornchurch and was soon back in action in the Battle of Britain. He was credited with his first confirmed combat victory, again a Bf 109, over Canterbury on 5 October. With the Battle of Britain winding down, Bamberger volunteered for Malta. He flew Hurricanes with No. 261 Squadron RAF from Hal Far from late November 1940 and was credited with shooting down two Junkers Ju 87 aircraft over the Grand Harbour in January 1941. Bamberger joined No. 93 Squadron RAF in 1942 and was deployed to Tunisia. He was commissioned pilot officer (No. 116515) on 9 February 1942[3] and promoted to flying officer on 1 October 1942. [4] With the same squadron, he returned to Malta in 1943 and was credited with another kill, again a Junkers Ju 87 on 13 July, this time over Sicily. Bamberger was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) which was gazetted on 28 September 1943. Bamberger was promoted to flight lieutenant on 9 February 1944, [7] returned to the UK in July 1944 and in November of the same year was awarded a Bar to his DFC. Good condition. Flt Lt Benjamin Bent DFC 25 sqn signed 7 x 5 b/w photo set with corner mounts on A4 page with typed biography WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot. Having joined the RAF in 1937, he flew with No. 25 Sqn as a Radar and Wireless Operator on Blenheims on night fighter duties throughout the Battle of Britain, assisting in five successful interceptions on his first tour, all with S/Ldr. HP Pleasance. On the night of 4th-5th May 1941 they intercepted and damaged an unidentified enemy aircraft, on the 7-8th and 8-9th two Do17s were destroyed, on the 11th-12th an He111 was damaged and during the night of 13th-14th June a Ju88 was destroyed. Bent remustered as a Radio Observer on 10th July 1941. Tour expired, he was posted to 54 OTU Charter Hall on 29th April 1942 as an instructor. On 23rd July Bent was reclassified as a Navigator Radio and rejoined No. 25 Squadron, then at Church Fenton, on 8th September 1942 for his second tour. He was commissioned from Warrant Officer in April 1943. On 21st March 21 1944 he assisted in destroying two Ju88s and at 00. 43 hrs on 6th June a Me110 over the North Sea, possibly the first enemy aircraft shot down on D-Day. Awarded the DFC (gazetted 26th May 1944), Bent finished his tour in July and then served as Night Fighter Liaison Officer in France with a P-61 Black Widow squadron of the USAAF. P/O Norman McHardy Brown 611, 41 sqn signed 7 x 5 b/w photo set on biography WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot. Norman McHardy Brown was born in Edinburgh on 27th July 1919 and educated at South Morningside Primary School and George Heriots School. He joined the RAFVR in August 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot. He was called up on 1st September 1939 and went to 3 ITW Hastings, remaining there until April 1940, when he was posted to 30 EFTS Derby. He went to 5 FTS in June and completed the course on 6th September. He was commissioned the next day. On the 16th Brown arrived at 7 OTU Hawarden to convert to Spitfires. He was posted from there on the 28th to 611 Squadron at Digby. He moved to 41 Squadron at Hornchurch on 12th October 1940. On 1st November 1941 Brown, in Spitfire P7448, overshot Hornchurch in poor visibility and flew into the London Barrage Balloon area. Brown struck a cable, seriously damaging his aircraft. He made a forced-landing on a small piece of open ground in the built-up area of Dagenham. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Sqn Ldr William Simpson underwent numerous surgical operations under Sir Archibald McIndoe and later wrote three books about war experiences and the Guinea Pig's. Before being invalided in 1944. WW2 BOB pilot Air Cdre R Berry DSO DFC signed Airborne forces Tunisia cover WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot, he later flew in North Africa numbered 5 of 10 issued. Flown by Hercules and also signed by the crew. Air Commodore Ronald Berry, CBE, DSO, DFC and Bar (3 May 1917 - September 2000) was a British flying ace and senior officer of the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the Second World War and the postwar period. During his service with the RAF, he was credited with shooting down at least fourteen aircraft with several more shared with other pilots. Born in Kingston upon Hull, Berry joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1937 and was called up for service in the RAF upon the outbreak of the Second World War. Posted to No. 603 Squadron, he flew extensively in the Battle of Britain during which he achieved a number of his aerial victories. For much of 1941 he served as a fighter controller at Turnhouse. Given command of No. 81 Squadron early the following year, he led it through the campaign in North Africa through late 1942 to early 1943, switching to leading No. 322 Wing in March. He returned to the United Kingdom and spent the remainder of the war in training and staff posts. Remaining in the RAF in the postwar period, he served in a variety of roles with Fighter Command, Bomber Command and the Air Ministry. He ended his military career in early 1969, having reached the rank of air commodore. He retired to Hornsea and died in September 2000, aged 83. Good condition. WW2 BOB pilot Sqn Ldr Benjamin Bowring 600, 111 sqn signed Joint Service fighter cover, 70th ann Battle of Arras WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot. On 30th August he damaged a Me110, on the 31st probably destroyed a Me110 and damaged another, on 2nd September he probably destroyed a He111 and damaged a Me110, on the 4th destroyed a Me109, on the 5th destroyed a Me109, probably destroyed another and damaged a third and on the 6th destroyed a Ju88. Bowring was wounded in the arm on the 6th and did not return to the squadron until 24th October. He was shot down in early November and admitted to hospital, wounded. After recovery, he joined 260 Squadron at Skitten on 7th December 1940, recently-reformed at Castletown, as 'B' Flight Commander. In May 1941 the squadron embarked on the carrier HMS Victorious. At Gibraltar it transferred on to HMS Ark Royal and on 14th June flew off to Malta. After refuelling, it went on to Egypt and eventually arrived in Haifa to take part in the Syrian campaign. Bowring served with the squadron detachment at Beirut. He returned to the UK in October 1941 and was posted to an Armament Officer's course. He later took command of 278 (ASR) Squadron at Coltishall. Bowring led the squadron until its disbandment in September 1945. By that time it had rescued 998 men from the sea. Bowring was released in 1945 as a Squadron Leader and joined Lloyds as an aviation insurance underwriter. He was a member of the St. Moritz Tobogganing Club, founders of the Cresta Run, and also raced at Brooklands in a Jaguar. Bowring died on 14th August 1994. Good condition. WW2 BOB pilot ACM Harry Broadhurst signed Avro Lincoln bomber cover WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot, BOB Officer Commanding RAF Wittering, often flew with the squadrons under his command, both day and night fighter units. Air Chief Marshal Sir Harry Broadhurst, GCB, KBE, DSO and Bar, DFC and Bar, AFC (28 October 1905 - 29 August 1995), commonly known as Broady, was a senior Royal Air Force commander and flying ace of the Second World War. In May 1940, Broadhurst was appointed Station Commander at RAF Coltishall, before joining No. 60 Wing in France as wing commander. [2] He participated in ground support during the Battle of France, an experience that taught him the importance of close air support for later operations in the war. He was heavily involved in the Battle of Britain and as Officer Commanding RAF Wittering, [2] often flew with the squadrons under his command, both day and night fighter units. Harry Broadhurst by Cuthbert Orde, 1941. In December 1940, he was posted to command the Hornchurch Sector of No. 11 Group Fighter Command, and continued to fly on operations, even as a group captain. On 4 July 1941, leading No. 54 Squadron as Red 1, he was involved in a dogfight with Bf 109s, claiming two Bf 109Es destroyed at 15. 30 over Béthune before he was hit and his aircraft badly damaged by a Bf 109. He managed to return to base, belly landing his crippled Spitfire, with slight splinters in left arm and left thigh. On 7 July 1941 his Spitfire Mk. Vb was severely damaged by a JG 26 pilot. In the combat he was Red 1 and claimed 1-1-0 Bf 109F at 09. 50 over Gravelines area. In May 1942 he became Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO), No. 11 Group, although he continued to fly operationally where possible. His final kill claims were made on 19 August 1942, bringing his total to 13 destroyed, seven probables and 10 damaged. In late 1942, he was posted to the Middle East and became Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) to Air Vice Marshal Arthur Coningham, commander of the Desert Air Force (DAF). [2] Broadhurst came into conflict with Coningham over the use and objectives of the Desert Air Force. Broadhurst took command of the DAF in January 1943, [2] becoming (at the age of 38) the youngest (until Air Commodore Don Bennett was so promoted on 6 December 1943 at the age of 33) air vice marshal in the Royal Air Force. He quickly perfected the way he perceived fighter aircraft ought to be employed as ground support fighter-bombers. His fighter squadrons were trained intensively to strafe and bomb German and Italian vehicles, tanks, transport and communication lines. This aerial cover of the 8th Army won the approval and appreciation of General Bernard Montgomery and would form the basis of the ground attack principles used during the D-Day landings and beyond. Broadhurst's enthusiastic backing of the Army and his frank opinions did not always go down well with his superiors in the RAF. He returned to the UK in 1944 to command No. 83 Group, [2] part of 2nd Tactical Air Force. In September 1945, he became Air Officer Administration at RAF Fighter Command. Good condition. WW2 BOB pilot Sgt Jimmy Corbin DFC 66 sqn hand written letter 1990 with good content on his post BOB posting to North Africa and Desert Spitfires WW2 RAF Battle of Britain pilot. Called up on 1st September 1939, he completed his elementary training and then moved to 14 FTS Kinloss for No. 7 Course, which ran from 28th April to 3rd August 1940. On the 10th Corbin arrived at 7 OTU Hawarden for conversion to Spitfires. He joined 74 Squadron at Kirton-in-Lindsey on the 26th but on the 29th moved to 66 Squadron at Coltishall. When the squadron went south to Kenley soon afterwards, Corbin remained behind to complete his training. He rejoined 66 at Kenley on 7th September but three days later he was posted to 610 Squadron at Acklington. Six weeks later, on 24th October, Corbin was posted back to 66 Squadron, then at Gravesend. He remained with 66 until 21st September 1941, when he went to 53 OTU Llandow as an instructor in the Gunnery Flight. During his operational tour Corbin probably destroyed a He111, damaged two Me109's and damaged aircraft and installations on the ground during daylight sweeps over Northern France. Promoted to Warrant Officer in May 1942, Corbin was commissioned in June. He returned to operations in September 1942, joining 72 Squadron at Ayr. The squadron was about to go to North Africa. On 8th November it was at Gibraltar and on the 16th flew to Maison Blanche, Algiers. He was posted away on 8th June 1943, the end of his second tour. Whilst with 72 he claimed two Me109's probably destroyed and two others and a Fw190 damaged in the air; two Me109's and two Mc202's destroyed or damaged on the ground, 14 lorries destroyed or damaged and an MTB sunk in Tunis Bay and another two badly damaged. He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 27th July 1943). Corbin reached the UK in July 1943 and in August he was posted to the Gunnery Flight at 57 OTU Eshott. Good condition. Battle of Britain pilot Noel Corry DFC 25 sqn hand written letter 1984 WW2 RAF. Squadron Leader Noel Henry Corry DFC AE Noel Henry Corry was born in December 1918. He joined the RAFVR on 22nd February 1939 as an Airman u/t Pilot and did his elementary flying at 24 EandRFTS Sydenham, Belfast. Called up after the outbreak of war, he was posted to 4 ITW at Bexhill-on-Sea. Corry later went to 11 FTS Shawbury on No. 17 Course, which started on 20th November 1939. With his flying training completed, he was commissioned and posted to 5 OTU Aston Down on 8th June 1940 to convert to Blenheims. Corry joined 25 Squadron at Martlesham Heath on 26th June 1940 and was serving with it until 29th January 1941, when he was posted away to the Special Duties Flight, 72 Group, initially at Northolt and later at Denham and Eastchurch. On 19th February 1942 he joined 8 (P) AFU, training in precision night landings, then on to 2 FIS Montrose on 14th April 1942 for a flying instructors course, after which he was posted to 14(P) AFU Banff as a Flight Commander Flying Instructor, operating Oxfords. On 14th March 1944 Corry went to 30 OTU Hixon, flying Wellingtons, to prepare for operational flying in heavy bombers. He moved to 1656 Heavy Conversion Unit, Lindholme, where he joined a crew who had lost their skipper. After two weeks at the No. 1 Lancaster Finishing School at Hemswell, the crew then joined 12 Squadron at Wickenby, Corry as a Squadron Leader and 'A Flight Commander. As he was on his second tour, Corry was required to do only 20 operations but his crew, on their first tour, had to complete 30. Keen to stay with them, Corry continued after his quota was up and he was posted away when it was discovered that he had done 24. He was awarded the DFC (gazetted 8th December 1944). He later went to HQ Bomber Command Air Staff, attached to HQ No. 1 Group, Bawtry, as Air Crew Safety and Rescue Officer. His final posting was to No. 1 Parachute School. Corry was released from the RAF on 27th November 1945 as a Squadron Leader. He died on 27th March 2006. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
